Telarc and MCG Jazz have been honored with five GRAMMY Awards by the National
Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences at the 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards Ceremony
on Sunday, February 11, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
“It is a huge honor for me to win my first Classical Producer of the
Year GRAMMY,” said Elaine Martone, Senior Vice President of Artist Relations
and Production at Telarc. “I share this honor with the remarkable artists
I have the privilege of producing in classical and jazz, especially the visionary
Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Paavo Jarvi and
the Cincinnati Symphony (both ensembles are our long-time partners), Ben Zander
and the Philharmonia, classical guitarist David Russell, and jazz pianist Michel
Camilo who lends his amazing talents to Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in
Blue’ – these are the artists that are represented by this award.
But the real unsung heroes are my colleagues at Telarc who are committed to
excellence. On their extraordinary shoulders, I get to stand. It is my privilege
to be at the GRAMMYs and accept this award.”
Since 1980, Telarc has been honored with 54 GRAMMY Awards for performance,
production, and engineering. Other important awards have included the French
Grand Prix du Disque and Diapason d’Or; Japan’s Record
of the Year; Germany’s Audiophile CD of the Year; and Gramophone
Magazine’s 2004 Label of the Year. Although it began as a classical-only
label, Telarc now boasts a catalog of more than 1000 recordings, ranging from
classical and classical-crossover to jazz, contemporary jazz, Americana, pop
and blues. Telarc releases approximately fifty-five recordings each year, working
with a notable roster of artists.
Internationally renowned tenor saxophonist and composer Michael Brecker –
a 12-time GRAMMY Award winner – died of leukemia on January 13 at age
57. Brecker was afflicted with MDS, myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow
disorder. Although he was very sick, Brecker completed a final album, Pilgrimage,
which will be released on Heads Up International in May of 2007. The recording
includes pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, guitarist Pat Metheny, drummer
Jack DeJohnette and bassist John Patitucci.
MCG Jazz is a division of Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG), a multi-discipline,
minority-directed center dedicated to fostering a sense of creative, intellectual
and economic empowerment and growth among disadvantaged people in urban communities.
